Standard IBM answer--that depends.If not, then what do you think is today's fastest pc system (I am talking of "normal", affordable systems)?Would that fastest system be a MAC or a PC?

The MX authoring environment runs faster on Windows than on the Mac. For playback, the Windows file system (especially NTFS) is faster than Mac, but Mac tends to do better on sound and graphics.

I'll let the Mac gurus talk about their specialty. As for PC, I think the Pentium is up to 3.06 GHz, and Intel has a higher-performance CPU called the Xeon. It's up to 2.8 GHz, but I think it's faster than a 3.06 GHz P4. I know Dell is offering systems with dual processors, but I don't think Director takes advantage of that feature.
There are other considerations.
- Bus speed: go with 533 MHz for the P4.
- Hyperthreading: not sure if it helps Director.
- Cache: 512K
- RAM: 512MB minimum, the more the merrier.
- Hard disk speed: 7200 RPM minimum. UltraSCSI goes up to 15000 RPM, I think.
- Video card: I like ATI Fire GL X1 or nVidia Quadro4900XGL. The more VRAM the better.
- OS: XP Pro
- Monitor: Flat-screen CRT for speed, Flat-panel digital LCD for clarity and brightness, but some smearing on high-speed motion.
Of course, you realize that I'm describing a $5,000+ system, but you asked for the fastest ^_^
