1) Is there an Xtra to zip the files and then upload them using the FTP protocol or something similar? I want to do this transparently for the user--not by starting an external application to do the zipping and uploading. I know ShockFiler will upload, but it won't zip first.
I believe the save as Java Xtra includes a zip extension but I don't know OTTOMH how well it works.
As for FTP, check out XtraNet (free). There are other FTP Xtras as well. In all cases check out the product list at updatestage.com.
2) Is there a way to convert wave and/or aiff files to mp3 on the user's machine before uploading them?
None I know of.
3) Once on the server (Linux or Win2K), what would you use to unzip the files and then convert the resulting wave or aiff files to mp3 or Real (so they can be streamed to the teacher who wants to check the homework)?
CGI.
