Alright, a breakthrough: I procured versions 1.4.8 and 1.2 of the vaunted Apple CD/DVD Driver. 1.4.8 made no difference, but 1.2 WORKED!
So my conclusion: CDPro does not work properly with 1.4.7 or 1.4.8 in addition to the 1.3.x drivers that are already documented. Thanks to all who helped.
