My guess is that these machines either do not have an internal speaker, or Windows is not recognizing it. That would jive with why we do not have the "default beep" nor "default sound" nor any "default" sound selection in the Window's Sound Control Panel.

Curiously, I just came to the same problem as you today and found this thread in my lingo-l folder. I don't think it could be related only to the presence of an internal speaker.

On my XPpro computer, I do have an internal speaker since I can clearly hear it beep when I modify the volume in the slider that pops up when I left click on the speaker icon in the system tray. But like you, I can't hear any beep using the beep command in the message window, although I hear a sound with the alert() command. This with D8.5.1, either in running mode or when the movie is stopped. Like you, I have no "default" or "default sound" or any localized name looking like this in my sound CP.

FWIW, I use a localized (French) version of Win XP (without SP) and my sound chip is integrated on the motherboard (creative).

Anyway, no beep.

Count me in the "No beep" club ;-)

NB: on my Win98F computer, the beep works but there I have an item called "Son par dfaut" in the Windows sound CP that I definitely can't found in XP...
