The "Drop Down List" actually behaves (somewhat) like a Macintosh pop up menu... which means it opens with the current item at the same level as the menu control itself.
To create a platform-specific control, whose behavior changes according to the Operating System it is running on, you can use the OSControl Xtra. You can download a demonstration copy from the url in my signature.
