Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see any way to do this w/o causing a conflict w/the menus or nixing the menus entirely.
leave it as it is now and ADD your own key triggering. now you have a function assigned to each shortcut. you can call the same function with your own key event triggering.
Be aware that the menu will absorb all <command> & <control> key combo presses. Maybe this has changed in resent versions. Haven't checked lately.
