is it possible to extract media files from a director cast ?

Kerry mentioned Werner's Xtra for images; you can save the #text members out as RTF and #field members as plain ASCII.

But I think it might be a better approach to consider *why* you want to do this. As mentioned external links will mean a performance hit, and if your movie gets separated from its assets in one way or another, it'll stop functioning completely.

If you're stuck with a monster huge fat cast, and want to try to break things into logical pieces to make them more manageable, consider using multiple internal (or external) casts. You can drag and drop from the main cast into those and the references will be updated, you'll have your logical containers, and you won't have to worry as much about performance issues.
