Use FileXtra4 and PropSave. They're both free; with FileXtra4 you can check to see if files and folders exist and issue open and save dialog boxes (if you wish), and with PropSave, you can save Director data (such as property lists, in your case) straight to disk, and later read them back in again. I'm using that combination on several projects, and it works extremely well.
