Hi John,
I'm scratching my head with issues like this. I only use Director occasionally amongst other
graphics and multimedia software and not as my main production tool.
I'm always scared when i take a look at the director quirk list http://www.updatestage.com/buglist.html
This does'nt really seem to get better i'm afraid. I know Director is a complex tool, but i can't remember any trouble like this in Flash.
I don't use Flash for anything serious so the following are NOT my comments, they are from a flash user on the "Flashcoders" list:
Well I have been struggling with Flash 7 and Flash Remoting for a month now on a major project which may be cancelled if I can't resolve this set of bugs.
1) Author level placed assets disappearing from the time line when played back on win2000 pc's. But also occasionally on winXP systems too. Why would this happen?
2) Using the MovieClipLoader to preload a swf into a level1 causes the swf to just get stuck on it's first frame and hang and no ActionScript will execute!
3) Constant issues with the Flash Remoting server hanging and not initialising properly.
4) The Flash 7 player crashing IE6 on win2000
5) Not being able to dynamically load a font from a shared library so I can display multiple European languages.

When you are an independent Flash developer you are left trying to fathom problems way beyond the normal ActionScript development you should be working at but trying to understand and debug system level faults in Macromedia technology which of course Macromedia are non too keen to admit too or help you with without having to pay them around $300 per incident! I think one of the biggest features Flash needs is more thorough and decent error reporting as to say why a font has not loaded instead of just text disappearing or just appearing non anti-aliased - that's hardly intuitive Macromedia! </rant>
Is Flash dead :^ (
