The only solution we were able to find is to use MX 2004.
AND to be sure to use axConvertToFile(soundName, filename, "MPEG3"/"SWA") on a sound file that is _already_ mono OR to use axSetEnvironmentInfo("convertNumChannels", 1) prior to conversion.
And that these problems seem, to date, to be Windows-specific and perhaps even sound card specific (Creative SB Live! Value).
