I'm not sure what's happening on your end but:

window("stage").appearanceOptions.mask = member(...)

works just fine for me, and I can toggle between two masks without crashing
(as you stated, both are 1-bit bitmap cast members). And "the stage" is
still a valid verbose Lingo means of referring to the stage window (it's
_always_ been a window object it's just that its window nature has been
hidden from Lingo until MX'04).
