Incidentally, for anyone who didn't know this already, my preferred method is a bit different. If you import, then cut, not copy, the new member, then paste over the old graphic, it replaces also. I've met people who hadn't ever known this, so I hope this can help someone.

There is only one sprite in the movie (sprite 16) and its source member
points to an empty slot in cast window.

This is a very handy feature of Director's. Quite often you may want to replace a bitmap with a new one. You could import the new bitmap, select it, select the right sprite, and do an exchange. Alternately you could delete the cast member and import into that slot, and the sprite will show the new bitmap. Your example movie is half way through that process.
