Contrary to some other responses:

* you can play mpg videos on PC without DirectMedia Xtra, (although
  it's great for that purpose)

* you don't need to convert them to quicktime

It sounds to me as if you should use the windows media player activex
control within Director.  Find it under INSERT -> CONTROL -> ACTIVEX.  The
control is already installed on your machine if you're using WMP to play the
videos on Windows, so it should be listed in the list of installed controls.
You'll find its API under the Properties, Methods, and Events tabs.
