Well my message seems to have hit a few buttons.
First off I must agree with two points. A person who buys a Director
software package has the right to distribute runtime products. This is
primarily in regard to projectors, protected movies and associated files
such as Xtras. I have bought two Director programs over the last 4 years
plus 5 other MM products that I am very happy with. I therefore, like
yourselves, have the right to distribute a finished projector, or even
an unfinished one for that matter.
The second point that I agree with is that this is not a grey area. A
stub projector is a finished runtime product. MM specifically allows
free distribution of runtime products.
Let me introduce to you here what may possibly be a new concept. It is
called Freeware. :) A person makes a clock projector or a calculator
projector or a game projector or a stub projector or any other sort of
projector and supplies it free of charge to whomever they want in full
accord and compliance with MM's conditions. You do not have to charge
for a product to distribute it legally. Not charging for a small product
is usually a form of marketing or goodwill; you know, when a person is
just being nice and human.
Even MM gives detailed instructions on how to make and implement a stub
projector. Maybe things would have been viewed differently if I had
offered a paying job to someone on this list to create a finished
projector. Thats what most of us are using Director for, the production
of projectors for money. So I am willing to pay US$500 for a finished
stub projector on the proviso that the supplier buy one of my finished
projectors for US$500. To save on bank fees (and don't we all get those)
and postage we will just do a journal credit & debit.
I don't want to charge for my service (it's freeware) and I would like
to find a similar good natured and charitable person who would do
likewise.
Also on the point about how our purchase money is used:
<snip>
>It's in all of our best interests to have Macromedia as healthy as
>possible--our money goes for R&D, marketing (which helps us all), tech
>support, training, etc., as well as profits.
I am very happy that part of my $2200 (thats what I paid here for D8) is
going towards R&D and profits. However tech support with Director runs
out in 60 days, just when you were getting into the really grungy areas
of Lingo and training is something that you have to pay for seperately;
almost always by a seperate company from MM. If MM provided full support
then this list, and dozens like it, would not exist. After taking our
money for a great product, keeping MM healthy is up to the company
owners and execs. Maybe cutting back from two Porches to a VW will cut
back on their overheads if financial health is a problem. :)
This above sort of answers the final point:
>Sorry if this seems harsh, but if you pirate, you're stealing. No
>rationalizations--you're a thief. In this case, your theft affects me
>personally, so I take it personally.
Well it is a little harsh because I am not a thief. I have paid for my
product and I hope you have too. Fortunately I do not take this message
personally, that is I am not personally offronted. Just slightly
bemused. After all, a person that takes every hasty, bad mannered and
ill concieved insult personally is the type of person that starts wars
of all sorts. Pirating is the stealing of software and copyright. Taking
without permission. I am very much against such practices. In the
specific case of Director I am not asking for someone to send me a copy
of Director. I am looking for a finished projector. Different animal,
different rules. MM approved.
My offer stands. To save any further grief please reply off list if you
have any further questions or would like to beat me around the ears or
if you are just a nice person that would like to swap finished
projectors or chat about life and lingo in general.
Cheerfully and legally yours,
Kelvin. :)
