Hiya - no idea if this is the right way to go or not but if you get
your images into fireworks (it will open photoshop files and
recognise the transparency) and export them as flash .swf files then
director will recognise the transparency - and this transparency
holds together very well when scaling or otherwise manipulating the
images...
as I said I'm not experienced enough in director to know if this is a
bad way to approach the problem - but it worked fine for the
presentation I was authoring on a tight deadline - and the file sizes
were very reasonable IIRC!
