I think $299 is far too expensive for something which is essentially an
installer on Windows, and an app which sends an apple event on Mac, but
of course it's the only seamless cross platform solution.
I've only ever been asked to make screensavers for Windows, so I ended
up going for a cheap but not free solution because I figured it was
worth investing in a little support, just in case something unexpected
happened. I went with bitbull. A modest little app which does everything
it promises to. It creates an installer, quite painlessly, and works
without any hassle. You can change icons and graphics in the installer,
and edit the error/alert messages.
I can't remember exactly why I chose bitbull over the others. I remember
thinking that there was not much to choose between the various offers. I
think the fact that it created a user-friendly, compressed installer,
downloaded easily, had decent docs, and was fairly cheap were the
deciding factors. It was a sort of first functioning, first licensed
thing. Some of the others had no English docs, or didn't even download
or unpack properly.
The substandard and overpriced really go to the wall in the cut-throat
world of custom screensaver application development.
