Probably because it relies on the browser to figure out what to do with 
your link.  The browser receives it and decides, ah - this must be an email 
link.  And you have to open the browser in order to give it the link.

I haven't played with this, and aren't sure if there's a way around it, but 
that would be my initial reaction.
