Undoubtedly, most people on this list are hoping to take some time off for
the holidays.
PLEASE, if you plan on using an autoresponder ("This is George's email
program. George is out of the office until Wednesday, January 3rd, and
will respond to your message at that time.") - apologies to anyone on the
list named George - please, if you plan on using one, unsubscribe from
Lingo-L before going on vacation. At worst, switch over to the digest, but
please do not use an autoresponder while subscribed.
The reason is that a number of autoresponders send to the reply-to address,
which causes the message to go to the list itself, which creates a new
message to go out to everyone. The person on vacation gets the message
(really, their message), and autoresponds to it, and a loop is created. To
make things worse, people start commenting on the list about all the
messages, creating even more threads, and before you know it, there's 50
megs of messages in everyone's mail box.
The enrollment count on Lingo-L is practically at the 3000 mark. That's a
lot of people, but a lot of potential for error and problems. So, please,
unsubcribe if you plan to use an autoresponder. Traffic is generally light
anyway (until a loop appears), so please be considerate.
