Lars,
I've created eLearning appl. with themes as "Operating NT", "Word",
"Excel", "PowerPoint" , "outlook" etc which at its core follow a similar
idea (learning by doing). They wanted it tightly integrated with i.e. a
word window open , animated tutors walking above it,
explaining/demonstrating a certain function and next only this function
should be available for the user, his turn to do the next step and after
this the dir appl regains control and gives the appropriate feedback.
One way to go might have been to use MS Agent for the tutors and control
the office prgs in VBA. Parts could be done in director, too, integrated
into the VB app. via ActiveX.
But there would have been lots of problems along this way, ie: how to
desactivate all the other functions of the target program except only those
the user is supposed to act on.
Opening the target program in director as an ActiveX might be possible
(though I never really tried to and it would not solve the "desactivate
functions" problem.)
What we did was to simulate the target programs in director. Screenshots
and lots of lingo to emulate all the gui elements but, on the other
hand, seamless integration, complete control and no headache with windows
disappearing behind the other or when a user minimizes a window etc. A 4
hours animated tutorial would take about 400MB and 6 month from "concept
agreed" to "final".
