The DirectEmail Xtra does not require an open mail server if the user
already has access to an ISP with smtp service (most ISPs provide this
along with the pop server). DirectEmail comes with scripts that will
attempt to ascertain the user's smtp server as configured by several known
email clients. These scripts will require the DirectOS Xtra as written, but
can be modified for use with one of the other OS - type Xtras if you
already have one & don't want to get DirectOS, too.

You could also (and perhaps should) leave it up to the user to enter the
server address as most applications do during their initial setup.

Of course, if they do _all_ their email through those newfangled, slow,
messy Web email sites, then you could be right. They may not have a real
email account with full smtp/pop services. Does Hotmail provide full
smtp/pop service?
