Can't say for sure, but Macromedia has supported the Director-Flash
interface well in the past. I can't imagine them missing such a vital
feature in the next Director release. I wouldn't wait on the next release,
though--you have the tools you need in D8.
As far as I know, Macromedia hasn't made any official announcements about
this, and I suspect anybody on the list who really knows one way or the
other is under NDA, so I don't know if you'll get a yes/no answer.

I would go with Shockwave myself. I've done a number of puzzle games that
way--you can see some at http://familyeducation.com/k12/Student/ (click on
"games"). That will give you an idea of what can be done with a combination
of Director (Shockwave) and Flash 4. (Disclaimer--I didn't write all the
games there. If you like it, though, I'll take credit ;-)
One advantage of the Shockwave approach is that there are a lot of
resources out there, such as Gary Rosenzweig's "Advanced Lingo Programming
for Games."
On the other hand, Flash 5, with its new scripting ability, is a powerful
tool--just about anything you can do in JavaScript, you can do in Flash 5.
I personally haven't had time to use it much myself, but the reports are good.
HTH.
