Have you tried using lingo to preload the linked sound before it's needed?
It's probably just stuttering because it can't pull it off of the CD as fast
as it can from the HD.

Subject: <lingo-l> the tale of two sounds

Hi All,

(Director 8, Windows 98)

This is a little weird. While I was testing one of our projects, I noticed a
weird sound stutter in playback on a CD-R. Basically we have 2 types of
sounds a unique background sound that loops & various Narration type sounds.
The sounds seem to stutter (or pause) when the narration sound initiates.
Narrowing it down took a while, but this is what I have found.

The narration sound is in sound channel 1 and the background sound is in
sound channel 2.

Finally, I made a director file with just the 2 sounds. A background sound
and a narration sound. Mirroring the setup in the original project, the
background sound was internal & the narration sound was linked. The
background sound starts at frame 1 & loops. The narration sounds starts at
frame 40 (although it doesn't matter where it starts, really). When run off
a hard drive, everything seemed ok. But when run off a CD I get a stutter
when the narration sound initiates (both sounds stop for a second or so)

Now, when I take the same exact set-up BUT make both sounds internal, there
is no stutter.

We have never had this problem before, but this is our first project with
D8. This project has over 61 Megs of sound files. Making all of them
internal is not really an option.

I am using Direct 8 on Windows 98. All sounds are 16-bit mono Aiffs @ 22.05
kHz

I am curious if anyone else has had this problem. I have tried everything I
can think of. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick Youmans
