Hi Christele,
Alpha channels store transperency information in images. Places where the
alpha is white the pixels in the RGB channels will be visible while places
where it's black, they will be hidden. Grey's are partially visible,
depending on their intensity. Although you cannot edit the alpha inside
Director itself, you can create an image with an alpha channel in image
editors such as Photoshop.
To achieve an effect like the D7 about box requires you to have two images.
Both have their own individual alphas. Then swap the "bulb off" member with
the "bulb on" member on mouseDown. Restore the original image on mouseUp.

I try to reproduce the same effect of the lamp wipes which is in  " About
director " (director 7) in the part Fun. Apparently it is about a bitmap
with layer alpha. Somebody has already realized this genre of effect or
managed to tear the anim.
