Yes and no.
Yes you can have Flash and Director control each other - you set up various
handlers within the two movies to talk to each other - have a look at both
app's help file references as it's quite extensive.
The problem, however, comes from the fact that Director does not support
Flash 5. So you will have to export your final SWF file in a previous
version format before Director will be able to use it. The version of
Director that you are using limits the upper Flash version as well.
Director 6 through 7.02: up to Flash 3
Director 8: up to Flash 4
