I think you're wrong about the coding abilities of MS engineers.
It's difficult to create a good OS, but not as difficult as MS makes
us believe. It's not even MS that does the programming for 'all PC
setups regardless of hardware configuration and components'. However
it's Windows engineers' fault that it's so time consuming/ difficult
for 3rd party developers to write drivers for their hardware. I bet
you too have seen the articles in computer mags about 3rd p
developers coming to Apple to write drivers for their hardware &
MacOS X. They generally expect 2-3 weeks of work, but are ready after
2-3 days.
Credits for the idea go to PARC.
(I think MS consists of a marketing dept only.)
