While I don't have specific answers to either of your questions, I can
offer this.
Que publishes a book that deals with Shockwave 8 and lingo. Personally,
I've found this book to be best resource (aside from this list) out there.
If you already have a programmnig background, I believe you'll find that
book and this list all you need to get the ball rolling.
