Not exactly.. I believe it depends how the server has been setup to handle
the situation. I'm pretty sure that I have been successful in downloading a
package to my authoring computer by simply typing in the URL. Now I've never
attempted that from Macromedia's site.. Actually I'm just musing here, but I
don't think that the URL would be a simple ask this address where the Xtra
package is but rather is the address to the package. However, you need to be
aware that you have to ask for the right item, in this case you are asking
for the compressed file (the download package) and not the actual Xtra. So
if you take that into consideration, the actual URL is:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave8/xtras/XMLParser/XMLParser.w32
that if clicked on will bring down the .w32 package for the PC. Director
will auto append the .w32 or whatever the mac extension is to it, which is
why the link ended with the extra XMLParser but not final /. Anyhow, I
checked, it does download if you give it the full URL in an open dialogue
for IE on Windows.
Doesn't help you, but it does clear up the little misconception that you had
about it only being a place to ask where the heck the package is.
Sincerely
Mark R. Jonkman
