I think she meant "emulation mode" or "software emulation".

That is a way of providing functionality through software in situations 
where there is no direct hardware support.

For instance, if a video card had a hardware mpeg decoder, you could decode 
mpeg files and play them.  Without the decoder you're in trouble.

But if you have a software emulator, you can do the same thing, though at a 
cost of performance - quality isn't as good, but at least it's something.
