[Apologies for the cross-post and to those who are not interested in Flash
or ActionScript.]

Many of you have asked me about updates to my Lingo and Director in a
Nutshell books and I'm sad to say that I still haven't had the time to
revise them.

But the good news is that I've just finished editing "ActionScript: The
Definitive Guide" to be published by O'Reilly. It has gone to the printer
and should be in stores in a few weeks (early May, despite Amazon's claim
that it isn't due until June).

"ActionScript: The Definitive Guide" (ASDG) is written by Colin Moock (and
edited by me)

If you're looking for an ActionScript book as good as Lingo and Director in
a Nutshell, check it out ASDG. It complements existing O'Reilly books such
as "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide" going into great detail about Flash's
object model and all the built-in methods and classes. There are lots of
practical tips, example code, a complete reference section, <yada>.

If I had to choose one word to describe the book, I'd say "superior." Colin
knows as much about ActionScript as I do about Lingo. After reading his
book, I am now able to answer many of the questions on the FlashCoders list
(the ActionScript counterpart to Lingo-L). The book was tech edited by Gary
Grossman, the creator of ActionScript, plus several other Macromedians.

Colin's home page for the book includes sample chapters and example .fla
files. See:

Thanks for your attention. Feel free to write to me off-list with any
questions. O'Reilly also makes review copies available to bonafide
reviewers and to academic instructors. Contact me off-list if you are
interested in a review copy for one of those two purposes.

Regards,
Bruce Epstein
(author of "Lingo in a Nutshell" and "Director in a Nutshell," and editor
of "ActionScript: The Definitive Guide")
