Hopefully you can see that my one line solution is a little easier on
the eyes! It could be easily adapted for German, but isn't much use
for saying whether it's a valid date for that month, or if it's a
leap year or not:

return item (((thedate - date(1904,1,3)) mod 7)+1) of
"Sunday,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday"
end
