That is a meaningless statement. It is virtually impossible to create
anything useful in Director without using at least the Xtras that come with
Director. I can't think of a meaningful objection to a free third-party
Xtra frankly unless you are doing a Shockwave piece, which it doesn't sound
like you are.

To my knowledge, there is no Lingo-only command to set the resolution of
the monitor (although there is Lingo to set the color depth).

Agreed. I usually give three options: Change, Don't Change, Don't Ask Me
Again. In the last case, I save a flag to disk that prevents the user from
being prompted the next time that they start the program.

This can be prevented by resetting the monitor resolution when the program
exits, which it should to be polite.
