Believe you have to pass the whole thing as a string (obviously) ie
sprite(5).setVariable("thearray", "(blah, blah, blah, blah)") but I'm not
sure how each blah would read....
Perhaps you'd need to do "(" & QUOTE & blah & QUOTE & ",".....etc
