I have never had a crash when selecting or embedding a font.
The problem with the national characters certainly is no Director
problem.
If the national characters work fine in any other program (MS-word for
example)
but not in Director, write your text in the other program, then copy it
to the
clipboard and paste the text into a director textfield.
