I can see where you're coming from Kurt, but I think it could be
argued sales pitches like Al's (and it IS a sales pitch) do have a valuable
place on the list, particularly in cases where someone needs an Xtra for a
specific function very quickly and doesn't have time to go through an
assessment process to pick the right one. You might argue that I should ask
the listees, but I'm sure you can see from this discussion the differing and
often confusing opinions that often come out of this approach. Having a
vendor come forward with a product that he knows will definitely solve your
problem is sometimes not just handy but a godsend.

I had this experience with masterApp a while back; I was well and
truly stuck trying to open files with the "open...with" construct, and
although I was fairly sure it was a run32 bug, I couldn't make any progress
(being a relative newbie), and my deadline was only a day away. The
masterApp guys were able to confirm the bug, provide a solution and offer me
excellent backup support inside 24 hours, enabling me to meet my deadline,
which I almost certainly wouldn't have if I'd gone through a protracted
discussion on the list about the pros and cons.

I think sales pitches should be tolerated if not encouraged, and
caveat emptor.

        Dave
