You are incorrect in stating that D7 would have kept the relationships.. at
least sort of. The behaviour your seeing is common to D7 and D8. You are
missing one fundemental step in working with external castlibs in which you
have "scrambled" the member positions. Lets say that you are in movie 1, and
you move 3 castmembers to new locations within the castlib and you use
internal navigation ie. go to movie or goToNetMovie to navigate between
movies, Director will not recognize the changes in the new movie that you
just opened. (which I believe is what you are seeing).
However, if you open the movie using File -> Open to directly open the new
movie vs navigating to it you should recieve the Adjust, Ignore and Cancel
dialogue that recognizes that the members have been shifted and Director is
asking you whether or not to adjust the references. Choosing adjust works
properly and updates the references to these moved members and all is well.
Do a Save and Compact and continue on to the next movie.
Now it is a pain in the a*@ to open all the movies of a major project that
has say 40 or 50 movies all linking to those castlibs.. So the option is to
use Xtras -> Update Movies and -> Update which has a similar effect as doing
a save and compact on the files, you will still have to click adjust on each
movie, but thats about all you need to do.
Sincerely
Mark
