I'm not sure what you're trying to do here. But you can easily
extract the name using the itemdelimiter. (It's all in the help)

on gimmeMyName me
  aName = the movieName
  pOldDelim = the itemDelimiter
  the itemDelimiter = "."
  put item 1 of aName
  the itemDelimiter = pOldDelim
end

-- Vid1

As for the rest... again, not sure what you're trying to do.
