Not sure about the Italian keyboard, but in English Windows, open the 
keyboard control panel. Choose the Language tab, click properties, and 
select United States - International.

That turns certain keys into "dead" keys. To type �, you type a double 
quote (") then an "o". You can do the same for �, �, �, and so on. If you 
want characters such as a double quote, simply type a space after the 
double quote--that changes it from the "dead key" mode.
