Did you try executing your workaround using an enterFrame handler
with a flag on it so that it only happens once?
property doOnce
on beginSprite me
doOnce = 1
end
on enterFrame me
if doOnce then
sprite(me.spriteNum).member.directToStage = \
NOT sprite(me.spriteNum).member.directToStage
sprite(me.spriteNum).member.directToStage = \
NOT sprite(me.spriteNum).member.directToStage
doOnce = 0
end if
end
