Oh Yes - Colin is completely correct in this.
Director needs to be able to display the bits, so the cast member
record actually contains an uncompressed copy of the JPEG (the bitD
version).

As for turning off the backup within Update Movies, I'd completely
forgotten that it can even do that since it always defaults to doing
it.
