I would also suggest Director 8 and Lingo Bible.  I'm not sure if an 8.5
version is out yet.  Lingo in a Nutshell, as well as other related
books, are good and helped in my overall knowledge, but the Lingo Bible
really did it for me.  I did a lot of forehead slapping (that "of
course" kind of action) as I went through the tutorials.  It also has
excellent object-oriented code examples.
