I have much experience in this area, since I just finished creating a CD which does
this very thing. Your idea of launching Acrobat
from the CD itself does indeed work, but only on Windows. If she wants to do this for
Mac, it's more complicated. With the new
Acrobat 5, you cannot launch the Reader from the CDROM because it requires several
extensions to be installed. Another problem with
Acrobat 5 is that it doesn't work on MacOS before 8.6. For old machines you need
Reader 4. This complicates things. What I did is
use BuddyAPI to check for an installed Reader. If it exists, then the PDF is opened
with it. There's no need to check for version,
since PDFs are pretty much backward compatible. If there is no version of Reader
installed, the user is prompted to launch the
installer for either version 5 or 4, depending on which MacOS they are running. Upon
installation and restart, they can then re-run
the CD and it will find the installed Reader and open the PDF.
One thing to take into consideration with this launching method is that because you
are using Director, but not as the main
software, you qualify for limited markings of the Made with Macromedia logo. You are
still required to display the MWM logo on
screen for 4 seconds, but are not required to place it on the surface of the CD as you
are with Full Markings. You still have to
send in two copies to Macromedia though.
