The easiest way is to use the "@" symbol. For example:

on mouseDown
  open "default.pdf" with "@xfolder/reader.exe"
end

The symbol "@" references the moviepath but translates it for either Mac or PC, so
that it doesn't matter which path delimiter you
use ( / \ : ). In this case there is a folder called "xfolder" in the folder that
the current Director movie is in, and inside
"xfolder" is the executable you want to run. (Make sure the executable is named the
same thing on the Mac and PC.) Another thing to
remember is that the path you specify for the PDF ("default.pdf") is relative to the
executable ("@xfolder/reader.exe"), not the
current movie! In the above example, "default.pdf" doesn't have any directory
specified because it's in the same folder as
"reader.exe".

The above example is if you know the path for their copy of Reader. If you don't, but
are assuming that they have a copy of Reader
installed, you can just do:

on mouseDown
  open "default.pdf"
end

in which case any directory specified for the file IS relative to the current movie.
