Hi everybody on the list! I have noticed a strange behaviour of the function ramNeeded().
I have a movie with some picts. Decompressed the pictures should be of about 8 to 10 MB in memory. In Director 8 under Win 2000 the ramNeeded() function gives me 32 MB, which is 4 times of what I think is true. I tested it on more than one computer, I got always the same result. I searched for castMembers that were in the cast but not used in the score and I deleted them (although my understanding of the command ramNeeded() was that unused members shouldn't be loaded into memory and therefore not affect the result of ramNeeded()). To my great surprise the deletion of about 2 MB of UNUSED cast members increased the result of ramNeeded() to 48 MB!!! After restarting Director, ramNeeded() gave me 32 MB again. Then I converted the file to Dir 8.5 and tried ramNeeded() on that same file again. And this time, the result was 10 MB, as I expected. Does that mean that ramNeeded() did not work properly in dir 8.0? Can I trust it now in 8.5 or is there another explanation to the phenomenon? Thanks!
