Well here is one way

the following code would go in a behavior, that would be attached to a
sprite

property pSprite --reference to sprite
property spriteNum
property pTimeout

on beginSprite me
psprite=sprite(spriteNum)
    pTimeout=timeout("fade in").new(1,#fadeIn,me)
end beginSprite

on fadeIn me
    if pSprite.blend>0 then
        pSprite.blend=pSprite.blend-1
    else
        pTimeout.forget()
    end if
end fadeIn

--
I don't know if it is faster, but to me it works far better.
