Do you get an memory low, or please quit or save as? I'am on a mac and i load my max 4.0 models from a netwerked win machine. I also got those. I've extended the memory allocated to Dir, clear the tempsyst files. It now runs great. If you're on windows, its may be due to not enough available ram... I've also uncheked the export animation within the 3wd exporter settings. because my models were not max animated. In case they are, i don't know if i would get those again, i've tried that. I also remark that Max have some problems with the textures to translate them to 3dw. Try export same model without the textures to see if any differences. If you find the problem, please drop a note on this list....
