Thinking out loud here...

I don't know the guts of the MP3 format, but I'm guessing that it has
the audio equivalent of what are called 'keyframes' in digital video and
that you are trying to play the sound starting beyond the last
'keyframe'. I can imagine this being confusing for the MP3 decompressor.
Can you try MP3s that have been compressed at different data rates?

Or, I could be entirely wrong.
