I've found it's actually easier to remember that the 'continuation 
symbol' is a character PAIR.

continuation symbol = \ followed by a carriage return
                     = "\" & RETURN

Here's why:
when Lingo gets evaluated, the 'folded' line of Lingo is pre-scanned 
to remove these char pairs so as to reconstruct a single Lingo line.
