Solitaire is my guess, which would make it be the game often called 
Shanghai. As for only one solution, I'm not sure about that, but if 
you mean that you want to make sure that there is at least one 
solution (which would make it unlike the real game), you could go a 
long way towards making it solvable by making sure that a particular 
pattern doesn't ever sit on top of another that's the same.
