FWIW if this particular ftp-problem is something you wanna look into, I recently stumbled on some info which might relevant, at sustworks.com, for a product called ipNetTuner, which is a Mac-only program, but regardless the docs speaks of such problems occuring due to some tcp buffer sizes.
