As founts of knowledge, books are considered sacred in India. It's believed
that Saraswati, the goddess of learning and wisdom, resides in them. If,
unintentionally, my foot touched a book, I'd pick it up and hold it against
my forehead as a sign of respect.
Years later, I came to the US to attend graduate school. Ready for my very
first class, I noticed a student walk into the classroom, flop down in a
chair, drop his backpack on the floor, and prop his feet on it. I wanted to
run over, yank the bag from under his feet, and scream, "What do you have in
there? Lumps of coal? Don't you know you're not supposed to put books under
your feet?"
Well, I didn't do that, but those 50 minutes in class felt too long. Many
years later, as an author myself, and well aware of the countless hours that
go into making a book, my respect for them has only increased.
